Edward Hitchon Godfrey

Graduate Consultant Engineer

Studied: Electronic and Electrical Engineering MEng at Lancaster University

“The Ricardo Rail graduate scheme is, in my opinion, probably one of the best available in the engineering sector, offering a really good balance of responsibility and support from the offset. The scheme gives opportunities to travel and explore the railway industry, as well as providing insights into the wider engineering sector through the Ricardo group. Compared to other graduate schemes I am aware of, we are given more flexibility to find our own place within the business, whilst at the same time ensuring we get the support to gain the competencies required to achieve CEng status.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the scheme so far and am genuinely looking forward to developing further skills and competencies in my final year.”

"The past year has definitely complimented some of my course, but, like most people, my degree work forms the foundations of my engineering knowledge.

"My first year with Ricardo has involved a lot of learning which I think is one of the strengths of the scheme, whilst I have had to use the knowledge I gained from my degree, it is the skills of independent learning and working in a multidisciplinary team that have been the most useful."

Future ambitions

"One thing this scheme has shown me is that I want to stay in the rail sector. It offers a wide variety of work and opportunities, and coming challenges to modify the UK rail network to make it work better for modern Britain are really exciting."
