Matthew Marinaccio

Graduate Consultant Engineer

Studied: MEng Mechanical Engineering // Sustainable Energy Systems at University of Southampton

"I chose this degree because it gave me the flexibility to work in any engineering sector upon graduation, and to specialise in Sustainable Energy Systems, as I intended to go into the energy sector.

"However, my fourth year group design project – building a miniature locomotive to enter into the IMechE Railway Challenge – gave me an insight into the rail industry."

“I have found that the scheme at Ricardo Rail has provided the support and opportunities to gain a range of technical and commercial skills over the first year. Although there is a core structure to the scheme, there is flexibility to mould the programme to meet my interests and help towards achieving Chartership. We are given opportunities to attend training courses and to go on external/international placements, and we are also surrounded by supportive staff across all the offices I have visited. We are also trusted with meaningful work at an early stage, so we have direct client interaction and exposure to project management. And that’s been really important, as it helps us to feel part of the team and that we are already contributing to the business.”

Future ambitions

"My future career aspirations are to first become a consultant at the end of my graduate scheme, then progress to becoming Chartered.

"I will likely specialise in rolling stock (trains, wagons, carriages, on track machines), but would want a diverse range of skills to allow me to work in different areas in the future. I am open to international assignments, and at the time of writing am currently working in Independent Safety Assurance in the Middle East for the next three months."
