Energy & Environment Experienced Professionals

Energy & Environment Experienced Professionals
Alec Davies
Alec Davies Consultant, I&U - Energy Practice

I’ve been with Ricardo Energy & Environment for 3 years as part of the CHP & Heat team. My work in this area has utilised my engineering background by requiring technical knowledge in renewable heating technologies and combined heat and power. It has provided me with many chances to go on site, see the technologies in application and understand their impact. The nature of consulting presents the opportunity of continuous learning as every project you work on was different from the last. I’ve been involved in projects across the business on projects that have included:

  • Working with international development organisations to further the electricity sector in African developing countries

  • Leading on regulation compliance for clients in the private sector

  • Seconding to the UK government and providing input to published statistics

  • Project managing a renewable energy strategy for a UK airport

  • Hosting emission accounting meetings with Anaerobic Digestion industry stakeholders

My time at Ricardo began with the young professionals programme which trained me in key areas in consulting and allowed me to build a network with other young professionals from across the business. I have since completed the programme and am now partaking in the various training sessions provided internally to Ricardo employees to develop myself further.

Chris Scott
Chris Scott Crisis Management Consultant, NCEC

Since joining the close-knit Crisis Management and business continuity consultancy team at Ricardo the opportunities which have presented themselves have been exciting, rewarding and continue to grow rapidly with some very new and exciting opportunities won. Our work is dispersed across a plethora of industries from major oil and gas supermajors to large well-known UK broadcasting companies, at the operational, tactical and strategic levels, each of which have unique and varying levels of crisis maturity which means that no two days are ever the same.

Jack Stevens
Jack Stevens Consultant, Due Dilligence and Expert Witness

My role at Ricardo Energy & Environment is as a Consultant in the Due Diligence and Expert Witness business area of the Infrastructure & Utilities – Waste practice. I first joined Ricardo in 2015 as part of a three-month placement for my master’s degree and shortly joined the team full time. It was a natural step to join the graduate/young professionals programme, and I was one of the first to trial the programme at the very first away day. It has been great to see the programme expand and more graduates/young professionals go through a similar experience, even if it does make me feel a little old!

I've been involved in quite a range of different projects since joining. These have been from market due diligence and feedstock assessments for investors looking to source waste for their treatment technology, to environmental permit applications and on site monitoring. The wide range of work has been the most interesting and enjoyable experience, as at an early stage of my career I like to try and explore different things. I work in a well-motivated team that has exciting future growth goals and colleagues who help to challenge me and support my development.

Ramy Saleemdab
Ramy Saleemdab Consultant, Resource Efficiency & Waste Management

I joined the Resource Efficiency & Waste Management team two years ago. Since joining Ricardo Energy & Environment, I been involved in a number of existing and challenging projects which have enabled me to develop a diverse set of skills and feel confident in my capabilities. Ricardo Energy & Environment is an ideal place for junior consultants to start their career: friendly working environment, supportive team members who are keen to help and a wide variety of training and development opportunities. The company has recently introduced a comprehensive training programme to build the capabilities of its employees and prepare them to play a key role in growing the business.

Jonathon Lang
Jonathon Lang Senior Emergency Responder, Chemical Risk

My current role is a Senior Emergency Responder at the National Chemical emergency Centre (NCEC), which is part of the Technology, Tools and Solutions Practice. The role is a senior support position to our core team of emergency responders, which until the beginning of 2018 I was one of, who deal with over 8000 client calls every year. These are related to chemical incidents which range from accidental chemical exposures through to large industrial fires. My role is to use my experience and knowledge from being an ER to provide dedicated leadership and support to our current team. Within my current and previous role, I supported organisations in response to significant incidents and advised emergency services on hazardous materials.

As an ER you are also able to pick up various tasks to use your extensive chemical knowledge and the 4-6 months of chemical emergency response training which each responder gets. For me this has included writing white papers on interesting topics; authoring response guides for our chemical response databases and growing new business areas, such as the work we do with clients around Poison Centres. Now as a senior emergency responder I am getting involved in managing projects and several business development opportunities. Recently a lot of my focus apart from the SER role has been the development of our yearly hazardous materials response conference for emergency services.

The most enjoyable thing about the role I have is the variety and interesting nature of the calls we get on a daily basis. As a responder I may need to be reassuring a dog owner that her beloved pet will be okay, even if they have just eaten an insecticide one minute and then the next I am explaining to a fire fighter how best to deal with a burning chemical tanker involved in a road traffic collision.

As a wider company one of the best things about working at Ricardo Energy and Environment is the available support in career growth, the interesting shared knowledge throughout the company and genuine concern for employee improvement. When I started at Ricardo in 2015 one of the first things I did was join what is now known as the young professionals group. I recognised this as an important group for knowledge sharing across the company of people at a similar stage to me and a great networking forum to learn more about these individuals and their activities in other practices. Cross practice work is encouraged at REE and it is interesting how many projects or clients in one practice can need the services of another. If you are interested in numerous areas of the work the company does there is plenty of chances to support in several areas. I recently ran a webinar on chemical resilience which included discussion around some of the great project work the Water practice are undertaking.

It is nice to be able to reflect on being at a company that offers real prospects of career growth, be that within one practice or moving between them. Personally, I am on a dedicated development plan that is fully supported by senior managers including the Practice Director, to move into a business development role, which is an exciting opportunity for me. I have been supported in this via dedicated coaching and specific training on personal development that has really helped me improve as an employee but also outside of work, which is down to the career support of the Young Professionals group, my team leader and the Practice Director.

Alice Smith
Alice Smith Customer Service Manager, NCEC

Working as a Customer Service Manager within the NCEC has given me the opportunity to work with a great team of people. Working with colleagues across multiple roles means that I can not only ensure that we're delivering great customer service but also understand how we can improve to exceed the expectations of our customers. No two days are the same giving me the chance to both develop and learn key skills encompassing (among others) communication, planning and problem solving.

Ben Grebot
Ben Grebot Knowledge Leader

Before joining Ricardo, I had spent the last 12 years working with and competing against a number of the teams here so knew a lot about the business. However, I was still surprised, and continue to be on a daily basis, by the breadth and depth of technical expertise we have across the business. This expertise enables my team to maximise what we can offer our clients in terms of holistic solution to the challenges they are facing. It also means that my team can support others across the business in the work they do.

What I enjoy about working here is that Ricardo Energy & Environment offers both the benefits of being part of a large multi-disciplinary consultancy with a global reach combined with the flexibility and reactivity of a smaller consultancy with a strong emphasis on the people we have. This enables my team to deliver innovative projects worldwide whilst also investing heavily in individual and team development. My team enjoy what they do and feel valued for their efforts. Personally, the flexibility the company offers in terms of working arrangements and support for individuals is essential to allow me (and others) to combine the pressures of work with those of having a young family.
